Blog Hopping – Is it essential?

Today I’m going to be discussing blog hopping. It’s been something that I’ve been thinking about ever since I started blogging in January.

WHAT IS BLOG HOPPING?

Blog hopping can mean a ton of different things. Some people class blog hopping as using a linky list to visit other people’s blogs, while other people class it as just following links from one blog to another. Personally the way I blog hop is by visiting the comments of blogs I already follow and finding new blogs I love!

So now that’s out of the way and we all know what blog hopping is (i’m sure you already did) let’s get on with the discussion. I’m sure we all know that blog hopping is something that’s mentioned constantly in the blogging community which begs the question ‘Is blog hopping essential to having a successful blog?’

I do think blog hopping is an important aspect of blogging. It gives you a chance to find new bloggers with similar interests to you as well as being able to get inspiration from other blogs. Whether that be in terms of post content or design. It can end up being a really enjoyable activity, not too mention it can boost your blog stats enormously. If you’re going to new blogs and commenting on their posts, the likelihood is that firstly, that blogger will visit your blog back. It might also mean that other people who are blog hopping will see your comment and come and check out your blog themselves. It’s a really reliable way to get visits to your blog.

When I first started blogging I blog hopped ALL THE TIME. Honestly, I’d spend a good two or three hours a day blog hopping. This of course was when I was just at university and had no job or exams going on. I know that most people would never be able to put that amount of time in, which isn’t necessary at all. I mean, I’m pretty sure I just did it so much to make myself feel productive even though I was ignoring my university work…Now though, not so much.

I think it’s way easier to blog hop when you don’t get much traffic on your blog. As my views and stats increased I found it harder and harder to blog hop. Not only that but life outside of blogging can really get in the way sometimes. I’m now working full time (42 hours a week). So finding time to even write posts, let alone blog hop is next to impossible. I try my best though, because not only is blog hopping good for my blog, but I really enjoy it. I love reading people’s posts and finding new people with the same interests as me. It’s one of the things that interested me in blogging to begin with.

I do think that blog hopping can be really beneficial to your blog. But that being said, it isn’t essential to blog hop. I know plenty of amazing bloggers who have a lot of followers and don’t blog hop. I think if your posting good content then you’ll get views no matter what, it just might take a little more time for people to find you.

This post really got me thinking about the amount of time I spend blog hopping. So I thought it would be interesting to add a poll and see how much time everyone else spends blog hopping as well!

Thanks so much for reading! Let me know your thoughts on blog hopping in the comments ❤️

  1. This is really interesting! I blog hop the same way you do, mostly to build my stats because I’m still a little blog. It’s also fun, but it can get exhausting after awhile! Also sometimes I feel like I keep ending up on the same blogs over and over again! But I do think blog hopping is really helpful in finding new blogs to follow. That’s how I’ve found pretty much all the blogs I follow right now. So I guess I agree; blog hopping is really helpful, but not absolutely necessary. Great post!! Also, your graphics are beautiful!!

    • Yeah, blog hopping is such a good way to increase stats! Especially to start with. I completely know what you mean about coming across the same pages over and over because I do that as well, it can get quite frustrating! Thank you so much ❤️

  2. This is a really great topic. I’ve found blog hopping the best way to find new blogs, either through the comment sections on blogs I already follow or through a weekly meme. It’s also a great way to let other bloggers know about you, if that’s what you want. I think like anything else with blogging, it’s really all about the time you want to put into it and what you’re looking to get out of the experience.

    • Yes weekly memes are a good way to blog hop as well! I often forget to even link up my memes though 😂! Exactly, if I didn’t have to work and didn’t have other obligations I’d blog hop so much more than I do now!

  3. I definitely want to get into blog hopping more, in the sense of clicking to other blogs via comments. Sometimes I just get so overwhelmed with the sheer amount of book bloggers out there! I think blog hopping is almost essential when you’re a new or small blogger, otherwise it’s hard to get the word out about your content.

    • I know, I never realised how many book bloggers there were until I started blog hopping! It can be really overwhelming but it’s also amazing. I do think it’s fairly important as well, it’d be very difficult for people to find you without doing it!

  4. Great topic, I loved reading this post! 🙂 I blog hop every single day but that’s because I am crazy – and it takes me way too much time if I’m being honest, yet I love it. It’s great to be able to talk with other bloggers, I love to chat with new bloggers and share my thoughts in comments. If I didn’t blog hop at all, my blog certainly wouldn’t be where it is now: this definitely helped me in gaining new followers and better stats, but most importantly, this helped me in forging incredible bookish friendships I cherish now a lot 🙂
I don’t think that blog hopping is necessary, though, it depends on how you want to blog and what your goals are. I started blogging and continue because of the community and my love for blog posts and chatting with people about books and blogging, so for me it’s essential, but certainly isn’t for everyone 😀

    • Wow! Well done to you! I love blog hopping, I just wish I had more time to do it. I do love that blog hopping let’s you chat with so many people in the community, it’s one of my favourite things about blogging! Yeah, it’s definitely one of those ‘do it if you want to’ kind of thing. I don’t think anyone should feel pressured to blog hop ❤️

  5. I used to do it a lot when I started my blog, but now I don’t really do it anymore. I do however find out some new blogs through twitter or instagram. Very interesting article! And I do believe it can bring a lot to someone starting their blog!

  7. Nice post Kristy! I wasn’t really open to the idea of blog hopping when I first started. But then I just started to comment back at other blogs, because I feel really special when I get a comment, and I want other people to feel like that too. (Ugh, I sound like a grandma) 😀

  8. This is super interesting! For me, I always felt like I had to give back the support that people showed me, from the very beginning. I think that blog hopping is basically commenting on others’ posts (the ones in your Reader and the ones from people who comment on your blog). I comment on others’ posts EVERY. SINGLE. DAY. and it takes up sooooo much time! But I wouldn’t stop, because it makes ME feel happy when someone comments on my posts, so I want to give back!

  9. I love this post! I feel like I TRY to find new bloggers, but a lot of bloggers I feel like I won’t be interested in (aka only reviews/book blasts) and it’s hARD TO FIND NEW BLOGS THAT I ACTUALLY LIKE. I have needs, ok?
But I definitely always try to comment on the posts that I see, because I know that comments are always appreciated 😀

  10. I totally feel this post! I also enjoy blog-hopping and commenting on other people’s posts, but I really have to be in the MOOD for it. If I’m not in the mood for it, then I usually end up skimming posts and not actually commenting on them, which always sucks. It’s hard to keep up with sometimes, and I only follow about 30 blogs! I can’t imagine how people who follow 100+ feel like! XD

    • Yeah I have to be in the mood for it as well. I do find myself skimming posts a lot and then not really knowing what to comment. Usually if I do that I like the post instead of commenting, just to let people know I have read it and liked it but I’m being too lazy to think of a comment 😂

  11. I always thought blog hopping just meant going to the blogs you already follow and catching up on their posts! That’s what I always do haha, I rarely look for new blogs cause I can’t even keep up with the ones I already follow. 😅

  12. I blog hop a few times a week thanks to Bloglovin’ Daily Digest. They send me updates for the blogs I follow and suggestions of new blogs based on the blogs I follow. Sometimes I will just see a random post that draws my attention to a new blog. But there are SO many book blogs out there!

  13. I haven’t been blog hopping as much as I’d like to lately (I’ve been a bit busy) but I’m trying to more! I have free time at work where I can browse the internet, but I can’t really read without it being too obvious. I take this time to write, but I’m now realizing I can also take that time to blog hop! 🙂

  14. Great post, Kirsty! I completely agree with you on everything. Blog hopping is great for boosting your stats, making more blogging friends, and just generally finding other incredible blogs to follow but it isn’t essential to being a successful blogger. Last year I actually hit a point where I was completely burned out on blogging because of blog hopping and the fact that I was forcing myself to do it every day and visits 100+ blogs to keep my stats up. So I also think after a while it can get overwhelming and isn’t always plausible whenever you have a job or real life gets busy. I mainly see it as something extra that I can use to keep up with blogger friends nowadays. I probably blog hop three times a week or every other day because it works better for me that way. I try to keep it from being something I HAVE to do and just remember that it’s supposed to be a fun way to connect with others rather than a need. 😊

    • That’s such a great way to look at it! I think I need to take some of your advice. I always feel so guilty for not blog hopping and commenting back because I’m so appreciative of everyone who comments on my blog but I just really struggle to find the time 😩!

      Liked by 1 person

      • I think it’s inevitable to feel a bit guilty about it because I know I still do whenever I can’t reply to comments straight away because of lack of time but we all understand. Sometimes it’s just
hard to find the time to blog. 😊

  16. YES YES ABSOLUTELY I TOTALLY AGREE WITH YOU!. I’m a university student I have finals coming up, and yet here I am on my third hour of blog hopping. As a newbie to the blogosphere I find blog hopping so helpful and informative as I get to see what everyone is talking about and get ideas on posts that I would like to write. Because I am devoting my blog to book reviews and bookish discussions I find myself scouring through others reviews and what other people have to say about books I have recently read and about the act of reading in general. This gives me inspiration to write and allows me to engage in fun discussions and share my thoughts about characters and plots I found intriguing or totally ludicrous.

    • Exactly! I think blog hopping is such a good way to introduce you to the book blogging community! It really lets you discover a lot of new posts and find new inspiration ❤️

  17. I love blog hopping simply because I love to read. I spend my time mostly in front of the computer reading and finding more materials to read. If not for blog hopping, how am I supposed to find new and fresh bloggers who wrote fantastic contents? Bloglovin’ is a good platform for bloggers but most of the promoted and recommended bloggers by them, are already established and have thousands of followers and likes.
    p/s: I don’t think I’m going to stop lol

    • That’s what I’ve always wondered! I found all of the blog I follow though blog hopping pretty much, maybe a few from twitter but still, not many. I’m not sure how people find blogs that don’t blog hop but I know they do! I use Bloglovin as well, sometimes I go on to the likes on a post and check out the people who have liked it and find blogs like that as well!

  20. I love making relationships with other bloggers and blog hopping is definitely the way to do that. Also, because I love to read and talk about he books I’ve read I like to look for those posts where I can see what another blogger bought about that book. It’s endlessly fascinating. Of course, I do wish I could spend more time at it. I too have a full time job and a husband, dog, etc. lol.
